Diversity Action Council

Vision

Portland State University values diversity among students, faculty, and staff for the following reasons.

Responsibility to educate the citizens of the world

We recognize that students in the 21st century live in the global world and must learn to think beyond the boundaries of the nation state. Consequently, the university has a particular responsibility to prepare students to become citizens of the world. For students to become leaders in this global society, they need to learn how to accept diversity, negotiate differences, and form coalitions with diverse individuals and groups. By supporting and enabling students to successfully participate in a diverse society, we seek to achieve an effective pluralistic democracy that is equitable and just for all.

Diversity contributes to critical thinking skills

Students who develop the ability to understand alternative perspectives tend to exhibit empathy and have a better capacity to evaluate complex social problems. They develop better critical thinking skills, and they are better prepared to take on leadership roles as decision makers and facilitators solving social problems by negotiating different perspectives. Accordingly, it is important for the university to create an environment where students can acquire knowledge and understanding of the issues related to diversity. Learning about diversity happens both formally and informally. Students learn from informal interactions with diverse peers, staff, and faculty. Students who associate with others from diverse backgrounds show greater openness to multiple viewpoints and willingness to analyze and assess their own beliefs. Social diversity, multiple historical perspectives, and cultural awareness should also be addressed in the formal educational curricula. Such informal and formal activities lead to learning as well as further student development and maturity.

“Let Knowledge Serve the City”

The themes above come together in Portland State University’s motto “Let Knowledge Serve the City.” Portland State is proud to be an active and contributing partner that strives to connect with diverse communities and develop a deep understanding of and commitment to the greater pluralistic society.
